Introducing Kohler x Studio McGee

A Personal Remodeling Project and Social Media Led to Kohler x Studio McGee

If you ever wonder how the designers we see on television became the celebrities we follow, here’s a textbook (or storybook) case to illustrate how your favorite HGTV, Magnolia or Netflix stars emerged. Ten years ago, Shea McGee, a self-taught design enthusiast with a communications degree, designed and remodeled the home she and her husband Syd shared together. She knew what she liked and loved the process of transforming her home. She decided to document it on social media…and shared their progress and design tips with friends and family. People took notice. Lots of people. The positive response gave Shea confidence that starting a full-time design business might be possible. Two years later they launched StudioMcGee.com and a YouTube channel to further spread the word. Soon, Shea was designing and curating products of her own and launching McGee & Co., their e-commerce brand. This step made the products she designed directly available to the public. The online selling took off.

In 2018, they expanded their portfolio by designing a luxury spec home in Red Ledges, a private residential community near Park City, Utah. And they had three children along the way. This led to the McGees designing and constructing their own family home in Red Ledges. Just two years later, the couple wrote a New York Times best-selling book Make Life Beautiful, profiling the start of Studio McGee and their life together. In the same year (where do they find the time?) they launched a partnership with Target and released the first season of “Dream Home Makeover,” a collaboration of Studio McGee and Netflix. Television gave them an even bigger platform.

And by 2023, after years of using Kohler products, Shea reached out to Kohler and asked if they might be interested in a collaboration. “I just put it out there,” she said, and now the Kohler x Studio McGee collection is available at Sink & Spout throughout New England. “The whole roll-out has been so fast,” explains Sink & Spout Showroom Sales Director Dan Lorenz. “We already have much of the collection in the warehouse for immediate delivery, and we’re feverishly catching up on building displays in the showrooms to properly showcase the products. The display roll-out should be complete by May, and until then, a wide range of products can be found through photos, material samples, and informative discussions with our teams in 16 showrooms across New England. And, better yet, these products can be shipped from our central warehouse to meet construction deadlines at your home.”

Signature Shea Style - "Relaxed, but elevated."

Shea McGee is known for her timeless designs. “I love to look to history when designing and I love to tell a story through the pieces,” she explains. Kohler is the history of the plumbing industry, so Shea and the Kohler team went through the company’s historical archives, pouring through vintage pieces, to inspire her design concepts. The result is a portfolio of collections offering beautiful bath, kitchen and lighting fixtures that “start with historical details and add the seeds of harmony.” Shea McGee’s goal with each collection was to create timeless pieces that will live beautifully in many home styles. All three collections evoke a nostalgic feeling, and also incorporate the conveniences expected from today’s technology.
